âWe could use Malekâs help,â Vinjo said as he fiddled with the latest magical device he was making. âAnd a lot more raw materials. Had I known how much I would have to build out here, I would have brought an entire workshop and a warehouse full of supplies.â
âYouâre doing a good job of repurposing things.â Jak smiled, attempting to be encouraging, but he was highly aware of time passing, of some entity out there that didnât want them to live. Back home, the fleet might already be engaged with the dragonsâand their fortress of death.
Worse, the air in the ship kept getting thinner. His lungs ached, and he had a headache.
They were on the surface, the gateship bobbing in the waves as the engines took them in the direction the portal had pointed Jak, but Vinjo had examined the air outside before opening the hatch and confirmed Jakâs suspicion. It was too full of deadly gases and would kill them if they breathed it for long without filtering out the toxins. The device he was working on now, something to stretch across the hatchway and purify the air that came in, should allow them to replenish the supply within the gateshipâif it worked. Vinjoâs curses and scowls werenât encouraging.
From what Jak had sensed of the world outside, all the life was down in the ocean. They werenât that far from land, one of the smoking volcanos the portal had shown him, but there was no hint of birds or insects or anything on the surface. Whatever had happened to this world, it might have made all of the land uninhabitable.
âWe need some of Jadoraâs plants,â Vinjo muttered. âI believe they filter toxins as well as taking in carbon dioxide.â
âMaybe you can emulate a plant with your filtration system.â
âI⦠hmm.â
Jak sensed Malek approaching and looked toward the corridor. As soon as Vinjo had found a way past Motherâs magically sealed door, Jak had levitated Malek into the laboratory, figuring they would want to be unconscious together in the same roomâtrue love was like that, wasnât it?
Since then, Jak had been helping Vinjo and sweeping out and down with his senses, hoping none of the entities that had attempted to trap them would follow them to the surface. Thus far, they remained far below. Maybe however theyâd evolved to survive at such depths made it difficult for them to live in the light and with less water pressure. He hoped so, though that only gave the gateship a reprieve. Once they dove down again to reach the ruins, they might encounter the same trouble and more.
Malek stepped into the doorway, appearing almost as weary and haggard as Mother. He held what looked like a scalpel and vial in his hand. âAre we floating because weâve been damaged and canât fly?â
âWe should be able to fly as soon as the ballast tanks finish draining,â Vinjo said without looking up from his work. âThe water adds a lot of extra weight.â
Malek nodded.
âIf youâre feeling better,â Jak told him, âVinjo would like your power for his new device.
